Keeping up with its months-long trend, the central bank injected a huge Rs950bn into the banking system through an open market operation on Friday.

The injection was made in the seven-day contract, for a rate of return of 7.5pc. It followed a similar Rs979.85bn that the State Bank had pumped into the system a fortnight earlier. Meanwhile, in an earlier OMO on Thursday, the central bank had mopped up Rs31.6bn from the system through a one-day contract.

According to the weekly statement of position of all scheduled banks for the week ending March 27, cash and balances with treasury banks of all scheduled banks rose 10.07pc to Rs756.714bn, against the earlier week’s level of Rs687.499bn.

The injection followed a similar Rs979.85bn that the State Bank had pumped into the system a fortnight earlier

Cash and balances with treasury banks of all commercial banks stood at Rs753.261bn in the week, against the preceding week’s figure of Rs684.385bn, showing a rise of 10.06pc. Cash and balances with treasury banks of all specialised banks stood at Rs3.453bn in the week, against the preceding week’s figure of Rs3.114bn.

Investments of all commercial banks stood at Rs5,678.64bn in the week, against the preceding week’s figure of Rs5,671.727bn, showing a rise of 0.12pc. Investments of all specialised banks stood at Rs25.736bn in the week, against the preceding week’s Rs25.654bn.Investments of all scheduled banks stood at Rs5,704.377bn in the week under review, against the earlier week’s figure of Rs5,697.381bn, up 0.12pc.

Gross advances by scheduled banks stood at Rs4,431.641bn in the week ending March 27, down 0.27pc over the previous week’s figure of Rs4,443.602bn. Advances by commercial banks fell to Rs4,285.644bn in the week, against the previous week’s Rs4,298.203bn. Advances by specialised banks stood at Rs145.997 in the week, against the previous week’s figure of Rs145.399bn.

Total assets of all commercial banks stood at Rs11,743.587bn in the week, up 0.86pc over the previous week’s figure of Rs11,643.753bn. Total assets of all specialised banks stood at Rs181.427bn in the week.Total assets of all scheduled banks stood at Rs11,925.014bn in the week under review, higher by 0.88pc over the preceding week’s figure of Rs11,821.45bn.

Deposits and other accounts of all scheduled banks rose 0.44pc to Rs8,508.337bn in the week ending March 27, against the preceding week’s figure of Rs8,470.821bn.

Net assets of all scheduled banks stood at Rs1,206.295bn in the week under review, against the prior week’s figure of Rs1,238.296bn, down 2.58pc.Deposits and other accounts of all commercial banks also increased 0.44pc to Rs8,486.969bn, against the preceding week’s figure of Rs8,449.667bn. Deposits and other accounts of all specialised banks stood at Rs21.367bn in the week.
